OCTOBER 31,1957

It was a dark and stormy night and the ghouls and goblins roamed seeking treats and dispensing tricks.  Okay, maybe it wasn’t like that on the night that the Evening Optimist Club was chartered 59 years ago.  Since that time the club has been promoted the motto of Optimist International “Friend of Youth” in Albuquerque by sponsoring activities like bike rodeos, oratorical contests, sports teams and a youth camp just to name a few.  Each year club members gather to celebrate that auspicious occasion and the outgoing president recognizes those who made contributions to the year’s success with praise and certificates.  Yes, certificates!  Well, that will happen again on Saturday, October 29, at the County Line BBQ starting at 6PM for cocktails with dinner at 7PM.  If you haven’t already confirmed your participation, contact President Gary at 292-4909 and tell him you want to be part of this year’s extravaganza.  See ya there!

RECOGNITION

The City of Albuquerque recognized the contributions of EOC member Helen Fox.  Helen’s name now appears on the “Wall of Fame” at the Albuquerque Transportation Center for her years of work in education and single handed start of the Title I program in Albuquerque for displaced and homeless kids.  It seems appropriate that her name is on the wall at the transportation center because when she started the program she literally went around the city in a beat up van picking up children from seedy motels and other places to get them enrolled in school.  After retiring she wanted to continue her commitment to helping children so she joined the Evening Optimist Club where she is now a member of the Youth Camp Committee still helping disadvantaged kids.  Thank you, Helen!

NM/WT QUARTERLY BOARD MEETING

The first board meeting of the 2016-17 Optimist year will be November 11-13 at the Sagebrush Inn & Suites in Taos.  This is an opportunity to get away from the city, breathe some fresh mountain air and find out what the district plans are for the year.  If you haven’t sent in your registration, you need to have it postmarked by October 31, 2016.  Your Lt. Governor has registration forms.

SINCE WE ARE CELEBRATING THE 59TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EVENING OPTIMIST CHARTER ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29, THERE WILL BE NO WEEKLY MEETING ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27.
